Back up and restore your data
Your data lives only on your phone, so export a backup regularly and keep it somewhere safe.
Updated 1 October 2026
Bunse keeps your data on your phone, not on a server, so there's no account to recover it from. A backup is a single file with everything in it: your budget, transactions, accounts and settings. Keep a recent one somewhere safe, and you can restore it on the same phone or a new one.
Export a backup
- Tap Settings (the cog, top right).
- Under Backup, tap Export.
- On a phone, choose where to save the file: Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or email it to yourself. In a browser, it downloads straight away.

The file is named with the date, for example ledger-backup-2026-10-01.json.
A backup isn't password-protected. Anyone who opens the file can read your figures, so keep it somewhere private.
Restore a backup
- Tap Settings, then Import under Backup. On a new phone, you can also tap Restore a backup on the welcome screen.
- Choose your backup file.
- Tap Replace my data to confirm.
Restoring replaces everything currently in Bunse with what's in the backup, and it can't be undone. If you might want your current data back, export it first.
How often to back up
After each statement import is a good habit, or at least once a month. That way, losing or changing your phone only costs you what's happened since.
